Why reviews are the only travel marketing that compounds

Ads decay. SEO drifts. A great review from year one is still working for you in year five. Here's how to earn more of them.

Every dollar of travel marketing decays except one: the review. Ads stop working the day you stop paying. SEO drifts when the algorithm shifts. A TripAdvisor review from three years ago is still converting bookings today.

The math

The average traveler reads a dozen or more reviews before booking, weighted heavily toward recent and specific ones. A single "exceptional guide, small group, saw a puffin colony most people never see" review outperforms a month of paid social.

What the top operators do

1. Earn the review before the trip ends. The last dinner, the last drive, the last hour of the tour, that's when to mention the review, not in a follow-up email three weeks later when the emotion has faded.

2. Ask for the specific thing. "If you write a review, the detail that helps the next traveler most is [the thing they raved about at dinner]." Reviews become concrete instead of "great trip, would recommend."

3. Reply to every review, publicly, in a human voice. Future travelers read the operator's replies as much as the reviews themselves.

The tone

The reason it works is that it doesn't feel like a pitch. You're at dinner, they're glowing, you mention it once, warmly, and move on. Anything harder and they never come back for a second trip either.

Two tools to run this: the Travel Newsletter and Deal Promotion tools.
